The 2nd/8th House Nodal Axis Theme
When Nodes fall in these two succedent houses, the themes that come up deal with possessions, legacy and legacies, inheritance, ownership, and material objects or manifestation of the material.
This can include creative visualization, which so often aims for material and/or physical improvement as its ultimate goal.
At a deeper level, though, these houses are about values: the extent to which we value ourselves, take care of ourselves, and give to and of ourselves. Problems here stem from over-association with the most obvious level of materiality, such as valuing that which money can buy but lacking an appreciation of the ephemeral, that which cannot be held in the hands.
The challenged person here makes money but struggles with self-esteem because he never learned how to value himself; it won’t help if he comes from a family that over-valued attainment on the material plane, and yet never gave their child a strong sense of self-worth.
The phrase “The body is the garden of the soul” comes to mind, as does the concept of the touchstone. The struggle that lies at the core of spirituality “versus” materiality is at issue in this axis, and is of particular concern with the Nodes placed here, since the Nodes are connected to one’s life path, as we’ve seen.
Finding the ‘mystical in the mundane’ is a capability linked with Taurus, just as Scorpio has an innate awareness of the psychological power of the material (usually through material wealth, when the 2/8 axis is involved). Inspiring both signs in this axis to see through the illusions of materiality is the spiritual quest of this Nodal axis, however.
Earth (represented by the elemental nature of the 2nd house) must find a way to coexist with Water (8th house). These are ‘fixed’ houses, in that the 2nd house ‘naturally belongs’ to Taurus, a fixed sign; similarly, fixed sign Scorpio, on the natural 8th house cusp, is co-ruled by Mars and Pluto, although it’s more typical to align Scorpio energy with Pluto these days. Fixed energy is uniquely resistant to change, although this is more likely to be an issue if the Nodes themselves are also fixed, such as with Taurus/Scorpio and Leo/Aquarius.
Everything to do with the physical body, its beginnings and its end, falls to the 2/8 axis, so expect to see everything from body lotion to burials represented by these houses.
Go to a mall some time and count how many stores sell something for your body (rather than your mind), and then go home and count how many products in your house are used specifically on your body (rather than your mind). It never ceases to amaze me how much money and time we spend refurbishing and maintaining our bodies.
The 8th house South Node, no matter the sign, brings with it powerful psychological motivations, largely unconscious, that dominate the actions of the native, and will frequently require professional intervention to understand. Without outside assistance, this South Node has the potential to hide some very difficult psychological material from the native, who lives out this material almost completely unaware of its hold over his or her personal values.
Keep in mind, when I use the terms ‘conscious’ or ‘unconscious,’ I am not only implying a psychological awareness or lack of same, but also meta-awareness, in that the individual is aware that his or her behaviors originated with parental biases, values, and beliefs; in other words, these behaviors are inherited. The process of conscious ownership of these behaviors is the point of this Nodal axis.
Aries North Node in the 2nd House: The quest for the North Node in Aries, no matter the house, is toward an expression of individuality, unique and separate from the social group.
Libra represents the ‘small group’, in that we usually have an intimate group of friends for whom we put on a social face, who also serve to define us, box us in, and prevent us from being fully ourselves, since we’re often held in thrall to the small group’s social conventions. This small group can be represented by our families, but as it’s Libra, it’s more likely to be our social group, friends we grew up with, or collaborative work group).
With the North Node Aries in the 2nd house, the identity works to separate itself from any 8th house dependency on the spouse or family for material support, moving towards a self-definition of self-worth, learning to express personal values, no matter the cost to the ones ‘left behind’.
The effort to do this might make this native appear, or in fact, behave, in a didactic, strident, and determined manner, in order to form an independent identity that more effectively represents newly-forming personal values, which usually have little to do with those with which they were raised.
If, however, in the process of individuation, the native doesn’t discard his introjected ‘absorbed’ family values, their adult life will reflect a more determined version of what they were raised with, rather than an entirely new way of thinking.
With South Node Libra in the 8th, there might be attachment to a marriage that provides little possibility for this individual’s development; or the family inheritance or legacy subtly or obviously has to be challenged or avoided in some way, for the native to develop individual talents.
Planets conjunct the South Node (either by synastry or in the natal) in the 8th might indicate a person or condition of mind that indicates the specific situation North Node in Aries fights to separate itself from.
The lifetime’s struggle, therefore, is to escape a shadow that can take on many forms; perhaps it has something to do with the family legacy, or it might be some form of mental illness, psychological trauma, addiction, or a child or loved one who prevents the native from true material and spiritual independence.
Look to Venus and Mars (rulers of these Nodes) to see how the native will be challenged or supported in his or her quest.
Taurus North Node in the 2nd House: Anything to do with Taurus combined with the 2nd house reinforces the theme of following a more authentic path toward one’s personal values.
With Taurus, these values might very well be as straightforward as developing the wherewithal to buy or build a house, a company, or another material-related ideal that brings the native closer to his or her goal of financial independence. The overall life goal here might be to fully understand how money works, and to learn to use financial capital effectively.
At the same time, the South Node in Scorpio in the 8th speaks to the likelihood of having learned or ‘inherited’, due to social and/or family expectations, emotional and financial dependence on the spouse or significant other.
If there are childhood dependency issues, due to unmet emotional needs (always a danger with South Node in Scorpio, no matter the house), the 2nd House North Node will attempt to make up for this through accumulation of possessions, which cannot reach the real problem, having to do with the insufficiency of something (usually attention and/or approval) from the parents.
An unconscious 8th House South Node in Scorpio tends to accumulate out of habit, rather than any deep interest in the objects themselves. In this it behaves in contrast ton its opposite sign of Taurus when in the South Node, a position that runs the risk of holding on to objects and people long past their sell-by date.
When expressing negatively, South Node in Scorpio in the 8th is uniquely likely to be entirely unconscious of its motivations, and finds itself almost irrationally fascinated by anything to do with the 8th house, immersing itself in the more negative manifestations only the 8th is capable of.
However, if the family values include exalted Scorpionic capabilities, like healing, spirituality, and transformation, this will be a formidable South Node indeed, giving added material power to the North Node in Taurus when the time comes for him or her to manifest his will in the material world.
Conversely, since the South Node is in Scorpio, a sign that can go to extremes, the material goals of the North Node in Taurus might seem like a burden if the native’s early life was spent with either too much or too little money; or if the overall personality/chart tends towards asceticism.
You’d have a hard time convincing the ascetic 8th house South Node in Scorpio person that ‘greed is good’ or ‘more is better.’ This placement, when unhappy or unfulfilled, has a tendency to self-denial, turning off the 2nd house desire to feel good through the body in all its various and potential expressions.
Possessions and the body itself, for an ascetic South Node in Scorpio, might never provide the answer to any sense of spiritual deprivation suffered in childhood. The nature of the fixed sign axis, reinforced by fixed sign houses, adds to the need to determine one’s own path, and will usually produce a fixed nature, stubborn and determined to go it alone if necessary, although with South Node in Scorpio, a relationship sign, going it alone will not be a comfortable or natural choice, but rather one made out of self-denial, if the nature turns in on itself.
This axis tends to toughen one up, if only because Scorpio in the 8th is terribly vulnerable on a subconscious level as a child, with the potential for many fears the parents very possibly never sense or understand, let alone address adequately. Taurus North Node impels one toward strength of mind that’s learned over time.
Plus, with the 8th house, you might easily come from a damaged, wealthy, eccentric, or in some other way, ‘odd’ family, which rather unfairly weights the early part of one’s life towards the potential for some form of difficulty that needs to be overcome, usually by developing Taurus’ stoicism.
Gemini North Node in the 2nd House: Possibly more than any other sign in the 2/8 axis (except Aquarius, which can have extraordinary mental abilities), this is where I’d look to see the ability to manifest via creative visualization, or creative imagery or imagining the possible and then manifesting it.
Gemini North Node, correctly aligned on its path, here relies on the abilities of Sagittarius South Node in the 8th, which has the potential, when expressing at its highest abilities, for deep faith and an almost entirely unconscious level of unshakeable spirituality.
If the native lacks spirituality, the possibility is to lean toward excesses of all kinds, including addictions. Sagittarius South Node in the 8th might unconsciously gravitate toward people and situations that prevent the native from developing his ability to support himself.
The combination of Gemini and the 2nd house indicates an intellectual approach to self-sustenance; financial independence is pursued via work that makes sense to the Gemini mindset, such as acting, writing, or anything to do with the spoken or written word. The ‘inheritance’ from the family might be a legacy of intellectual freedom (or, conversely, rigid belief systems that must be broken out of).
The Gemini/Sagittarius axis in general has to do with intellectual freedoms or their opposite: bias and prejudice; individual rights, politics, and understanding all that is built by the individual to create the larger idea of a usually non-material ‘wealth’ is reflected in the individual’s personal values.
Gemini’s personal values lean towards freedom in every form, so the structure 2nd house Gemini North Node builds will be based on the ethics of freedom, unless the 8th house brings with it unspoken bitterness and narrow-mindedness. If so, the life goal will be directed at situations that compel clearheaded thinking, free of prejudices that impede developing open-minded values.
Keep in mind that there’s usually an eccentricity, an independence of spirit that Gemini/Sagittarius carries all its life; the person might be able to live this out, but life exists on a continuum of possibilities, and so at one end is the life where nothing is owed to previous generations (ones ancestors, represented by the 8th) and you can be your own person, allowed the freedom of following the North Node Gemini butterfly wither it goes.
Then there are those whose South Node in the 8th has more contacts or is in aspect to a planet or point that prevents it from letting go of the past; for those people, their quest to build a life based on their need for freedoms of all sorts will be more of a struggle.
Cancer North Node in the 2nd House: Expressed at the most basic level, the life goal of Cancer North Node in the 2nd house has the potential to be very pleasant indeed, as long as the native gets what it wants materially without too much struggle, and without being forced to analyze his or her motives for attainment.
Difficulties in the early life, such as poverty or abandonment, deaths in the family, disinheritance, or adoption, will be hard for this combination to overcome, if it’s even possible for this person to forget the influence of his or her early childhood entirely. This combination reminds me of the movie Citizen Kane, where Charles Foster Kane gains an enormous inheritance, but loses his mother, his home, and his safety.
This combination indicates a strong desire to be more than ‘well off’; the native might very well look at money and material possessions as the answer to a lot of problems s/he has a difficult time articulating. South Node in the 8th in Capricorn is why the native has a difficult time articulating his or her deepest feelings, since the combination of Capricorn and the 8th house means that whatever’s in there, is in there pretty deep, and might not be reachable and made conscious without a lot of help.
That’s why the Cancer North Node compensates for their otherwise unarticulated issues with possessions that bring a feeling of safety, since the 8th house often contains a lot of rather frightening, sad, or depressing subconscious emotions the Capricorn South Node will hold on to but won’t actively look at, unless poked into awareness that he carries gloom with him wherever he goes.
This South Node usually leads to a fair amount of denial and/or illness, and the native might also be adamant at disagreeing that s/he is anything like the very same family members she criticizes. Conversely, this poor kid might have been the family scapegoat, or felt like the black sheep of the family. There might be some rather ugly secrets (family or personal) that this child either represents, knows about, or carries on a purely subconscious level.
There’s no getting around the fact that Cancer and Capricorn Nodes have the most trouble with family. Often, the family truly is a burden, but it’s also just as likely that the Cancer/Capricorn Nodal axis people feel like too much is asked of them even if all you asked for was a side dish at the Christmas dinner you’re cooking.
This is because of all the children born in the family, the Cancer/Capricorn Node kids have the hardest time separating from the mothership; these Nodes, on some level, live out the belief (or fear) that if mom or dad dies, they alone have to carry on parental roles. Since the purpose of this Nodal axis is to provide for others materially (sounds simple, when it’s not) Cancer North Node is in the process of developing the ability to nurture the body in all ways.
However, Saturnian Capricorn’s parental messages are buried deep in the subconscious of the 8th house, and will possibly only be expressed consciously when the North Node in Cancer in the 2nd gathers all the family around the groaning board on a holiday or writes out the stock dividends personally each quarter. At that point, the life direction, which is about taking care of others, might meet with some resistance, as the Capricorn South Node is reminded of everything s/he lacked, or thought she lacked, in childhood.
It’s my general opinion that if someone is going to get really wealthy, it might very well be this combination, since the 2/8 axis combined with Cancer/Capricorn says their primary goal is to collect anything and everything and hoard each penny, so as to reinvest and make even more money. Safety here is key, and is a primary reason the Cancer North Node works as hard as it does.
Their identity will be guided toward a practical, but often artistic or creative job, like antique collecting, which would be perfect for this combination. The potential for psychological angst level here is so high, though, I need to create a numbering system akin that given to typhoons, but if the native finds a way to make enough money, and feels safe enough, all his deepest fears might never come to fruition, and he’ll be a very happy person, heading off into the golden sunset on his yacht. As long as he’s not alone in this, he will have fulfilled the purpose of this North Node, which can’t forget to bring along the family when he goes.
Leo North Node in the 2nd House: This combination has the potential to be a major mover and shaker on the world stage, since Aquarius South Node in the 8th is often political in the extreme, cannily persuading, to the point of manipulation, the behavior of friends and family.
Leo North Node in the 2nd, when highly motivated, has every ability to be so endearing or charming that s/he becomes worshipped by many. It seems to me that little golden Oscars (those statues you see on some people’s mantles) represent this North Node well, because a tiny golden statue is fitting tribute for someone who might hope for an icon representing that which he’s attained.
Alternately, here is the true philanthropist, who has little interest in attaining wealth, but instead wants to give it away to others. There are many forms of wealth, and the combination of South Node with Aquarius in the 8th indicates the person has a vast storehouse of knowledge to draw upon, and can use this wisdom to form a school, to educate, and to help others create art in all forms (since the North Node in Leo inspires one to want to share your creativity to help others help themselves become self-sufficient or encourage self-esteem).
Their innate creativity might be prodigious, leading to a series of artistic works of some sort; the goal will be to make manifest their unusual intellectual or mental skills. It will be difficult to hide their light under a basket, since North Node in Leo usually manages to find some sort of stage to appear on. Aquarius South Node might hold the native back if the work isn’t sufficiently interesting, with the potential to develop some kind of Leonine greatness (greatness of character is just as much a draw here as greatness of stature).
It’s likely that this person is extraordinary in some way; South Node in Aquarius will have inherited some kind of eccentric and unique personality structure, making him or her stand out from the crowd Aquarius usually seeks to fit into. With Leo as the North Node, though, fitting in will no longer be the comfortable fall-back position; now he will have to shine, but the point of the 2nd house is to manifest something material from his unique mind. Simply living in his thoughts will never be sufficient for this Nodal axis.
This person usually prefers working with a group, since standing on his own on stage doesn’t come naturally to the South Node here; yet this is the native’s chance to take bows, center stage, and to take credit for inspiring others to manifest their own imaginings. The family inheritance here, that provokes the child away from the South Node into the North, often has to do with the father, whose behavior or life will, in some way, push the child into assuming the mantle of father-figure or responsible creator on his own. In some way, the child is discouraged from relying on his own father, as he develops into his own abilities.
However, unlike many other South Nodal positions in the 8th, Aquarius will probably try to understand himself more than other South Nodes in the 8th, which will be relatively content, most of the time, to allow the 8th house experience to bubble underground, in the subconscious. With Aquarius here, the otherwise unconscious, innate and instinctive 8th house will get an airing-out; windows will be opened, cabinets and cupboards cleaned. This is one 8th house South Node that probably will not go unexamined, at least to some extent.
Virgo North Node in the 2nd House: There always seem to be two distinct modes of lifetime issues with Virgo/Pisces Nodes, the differences of which are exacerbated if the South Node is conjunct a planet (or something else of equal significance, like the Moon).
These Nodes are controlled by the underlying dichotomy between Virgoan practicality and Piscean ephemerality. The difficulty lies in the deep divide between Mercury’s rationality (relying on what is knowable and provable, factual and evidential) and Neptune’s intuition (based on inner knowing, feelings, and sixth-sense perceptions).
The Virgo North Node, when it’s functioning well, is determined to build something that represents its core skills, which usually has something to do with its intellect.
The South Node in Pisces, however, might very well be fixated on sticking with the functions that have worked just fine, up till now, which usually involve some method of expanding its inner vision (through any means that will take the mind deeper, in order to discover whatever is there to be discovered). The comfort zone lies in inexplicable self-knowing based on belief in a higher power or an otherwise non-material source which somehow supplies every ‘thing’ the self or soul needs (which usually isn’t much, on a material plane, for Pisces South Node; ironic since it’s the ‘wealthy’ Pluto-ruled 8th house we’re talking about).
Pisces combined with the 8th represents a rather intoxicating blend of sensory possibilities for the South Node, which might be so interesting, it prevents the North Node from developing its intellectual abilities. As long as the South Node doesn’t hold too much sway over the native, or the Mercury is well-aspected in the natal, the North Node will be allowed to develop.
Keeping in mind that the Pisces South Node in the 8th is ready to bury itself in anything to do with 8th house values (anything from studying ancient voodoo practices to becoming a doctor to developing his inner shaman), the 8th house presents a fascinating range of options for the Pisces South Node. To that extent, the Virgo North Node might struggle to distance himself from what seems like a mire of the inexplicable, always striving toward manifesting something practical, rather than ephemeral or fantastical, as the Pisces South Node might prefer.
Whereas the Pisces South Node may be able to practice yoga and meditate, all the while peering into its inner 3rd eye, the Virgo North Node will want to open a yoga school and exhibit its practical knowledge. In the 2nd, the Virgo ‘eye’ is always looking to develop a practical use for any 8th house/Pisces wisdom or intuitive ability, but that 8th house is a powerful draw for any Virgo North Node, so it might very well find it difficult to completely abandon any psychic, supernatural, or occult information it gleans from astral projection or (waking or sleeping) dream states. Earth is almost always fascinated by Water’s abilities to dig deep and ‘know’ stuff no one is supposed to ‘know,’ hence the unwillingness to completely abandon the inherent ‘wealth’ of the 8th house.
Libra North Node in the 2nd House: I’ve long thought that, on a purely mundane level, the Libra North Node in the 2nd would make the perfect franchise owner. Most franchises come with rules and guidelines you’re not supposed to infringe on or act independently of, and although the South Node in Aries in the 8th is usually capable of making money by acting in a unique, independent, or individual way (as an entrepreneur, for example) North Node Libra would be happy following the rules laid down by a larger entity she can go to for advice and counsel.
From a more exalted perspective, North Node in Libra is a material artist whose task in her lifetime is to bring her vision or passion (from the 8th house Aries South Node) into manifestation. She exists to create a finished project that will be art, or remind others of art. North Node Libra is developing toward the ability to work within a collaborative group, willing to uphold any rules or laws ensuring the maintenance of the group. She could well be the leader of the group, or at the very least, provide its driving force.
This includes the rules of starting a business. If you hear a Libran North Node whimper about not being qualified or taken seriously, just point out all her accomplishments and tell her to get on with it. As s/he develops his or her ability to fit in with a group or collaborative work effort, she will go through a period of doubting her abilities, since South Node Aries is so accustomed to doing things his own way, fitting in with the group mind never occurred to him. The strength of the Aries South Node is to feel the fear and do it anyway, especially if being adventurous is part of the family ‘inheritance’ (‘family inheritance’ is a theme I will explore more when we get to the 8th house North Node).
In the 8th house, the Aries South Node’s comfort zone is about financial and emotional independence, little caring what the group thinks or whether or not collaboration matters. The 8th house Aries South Node will likely keep secrets from anyone who might need to know, like a business or marital partner. If your North Node is in Libra in the 2nd, this kind of secretiveness will undermine your functionality or ability to receive the kind of support you’ll need to manifest your creative vision.
Blame the 8th house, since Aries usually has few cards hidden up his sleeve; he is so busy expressing himself, he can’t take the time to lie, or backtrack to remember an earlier lie. Aries lays his cards on the table, except when you find Aries in the 8th, so my proviso/worry here is that the South Node in Aries is going to have to learn to share and do all the Libran things you have to do when you work with others, like follow the rules, and not make them up to suit his purposes. The combination of the ‘childish’, daring, or even risky impulses of Aries with the 8th house means that this particular South Node might spend far too much of his lifetime embroiled in fixing others’ (usually financial) problems and ignoring his own.
As always, of course, there are many permutations of how these Nodal combinations will play out. Depending on the family inheritance/legacy/myth, the 8th house South Node might very well have learned any one of many Arian traits. Since the axis is the 2/8, though, we’re usually dealing with inherited values, self-esteem, etc., as I mentioned above.
Aries and Libra both have the potential to doubt themselves (each for different reasons), so if the native has any problems stemming from childhood, the goal for the North Node will be to develop an appreciation for herself, particularly the body and anything she can or does create and manifest due to the 2nd house’s focus on making the Aries’ South Node dreams, dreamed alone in his room as a child, perhaps, come true in the adult world of “Making” the 2nd house represents.
Scorpio North Node in the 2nd House: Whenever we find the Nodes in houses that traditionally ‘belong’ to the signs themselves, such as this combination, the messages and purpose of the life path are magnified.
In this case, of course, Scorpio’s natural house is the 8th, so Scorpio North Node in the 2nd reverses its ‘natural’ direction, in that the 2nd house asks the Scorpio North Node to do something that doesn’t immediately appear possible, from the perspective of the South Node in Taurus, which is to aim for a kind of mastery and manifestation that isn’t solely about material goods, wealth, and mundane power.
The South Node in Taurus, due to the combination of the fixed nature of the sign and the natural rulership of the 8th belonging to Scorpio, also fixed energy, is uniquely resistant to change. Typically, this combination in the 8th house is strong enough to dominate the entire lifetime, so attaining the goal of the North Node in the 2nd will be a long-term challenge. Although this fixed nature is true with the Taurus/Scorpio dyad in any house, its effects are magnified in this particular axis.
The danger, if you will, of this Nodal axis, is simple: the individual over-values the material world and the power money brings (Pluto, the ruler of the 8th house, releases its possessions most unwillingly, and will hold on to what he is convinced belongs to him until he begins to realize the extent to which he is owned by his possessions).
The 2nd and the 8th have in common the desire to accumulate, often for its own sake, since ownership, possession, and material objects reinforce the sense of power, at the same time the individual derives ego-satisfaction from possessions. You take away the South Node’s ‘things’ at great risk of doing damage to the psyche if the person hasn’t yet begun to move into the higher ‘eagle’ or ‘phoenix’ capability of the Scorpio North Node.
For the sake of the soul, however, ownership and pride in possessions and the power they bring comes at quite a cost. The aphorism ‘knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing’ sums up the negative energy of the formidable South Node in Taurus when it’s unwilling to relinquish its precious objects, or, more perversely, when the native believes it is ‘owed’ these things because the childhood was deficient materially or emotionally.
Conversely, the South Node in Taurus also is capable, depending on how the Nodes are aspected, of creating powerful empires that make the material world run. Never underestimate the potential of the Nodes placed in their natural axis, because these people know how to manifest the issues of these houses.
Scorpio North Node will, over time, grow into becoming wise enough to realize that ‘stuff’ isn’t the answer, and that power must be used sparingly and with attention to the affect it has on others. True power is within the grasp of this North Node, even though, due to the nature of the 2nd house, this Node will most likely always believe manifesting a creative endeavor must take material form. In other words, Scorpio North Node won’t be satisfied that they have lived up to their potential until they can hold some version of an object in their hands.
This North Node here will want to be the founder of what will ultimately become his or her legacy; these people will leave behind them either quite a pile of gold, or a significant contribution to society. The rest of the chart will determine how their power is used, but any Scorpio Node must be cautious about how it uses its power, since power is easily misused, yes, but the Taurus South Node isn’t renowned for self-awareness, which is what the Scorpio North Node must attain if s/he is to expand the potential of what this Nodal axis has to give to others.
Attainment for its own sake, and most particularly, for Taurus’ need to feel comfortable at all times, is sloughed off by the mature Scorpio North Node, since Scorpio, functioning at its highest level, has no use for things, acknowledging that the comforts Taurus wraps itself in is lethal for the kind of spiritual, non-attached to outcome attainment Scorpio is capable of.
Scorpio North Node attains its highest purpose by helping others find their power, rather than immersing itself in the illusory power objects and ownership of things (and others, when these Nodes are misused) appears to grant. Instead of holding on to people and objects, then, the exalted Scorpio North Node here seeks to give it all away, becoming the Zodiac’s spiritual philanthropist, a hard-won transformational skill for this Nodal axis.
Keep in mind that this particular combination is one of the most difficult to live out, simply because it’s incredibly easy to fall into the trap of materialism represented by Taurus South Node in the 8th, and far too difficult to give it all away—willingly, graciously, and with no consideration to the ‘loss’ of one’s earthly power. True power comes with freedom from attachment to outcome, the greatest lesson this Nodal axis will ever master, and a major concern for Scorpio North Node, no matter which house it’s posited in.
Sagittarius North Node in the 2rd House: Generally, the Fire sign Nodes, whether North or South, carry a lot of energy that will be applied to the goals the native sets for himself, and pursued with conviction, as long as the native believes enthusiastically in where he’s going and what his motivation is.
Making money for its own sake is usually not of interest to North Node in Sagittarius; he’s looking for a life purpose, not a ‘job’ or even a career. He wants to love the path he’s on, and if he doesn’t, he’s going to be pretty miserable.
Material attainment accrued by the North Node here might come with one or two conditions; first, North Node in Sagittarius might take a very long time to find the most lucrative or worthwhile path, and then stick with it. Secondly, if Jupiter, Sagittarius’ ruler, is well-aspected, the journey won’t take as long as it will if anything is standing in the native’s path.
The Sagittarius North Node draws the native toward a “high roller” life, which South Node in Gemini can help with, since Gemini, even in the murk of the 8th house, can be counted on to excel at cocktail parties, although her sense of humor might tend toward the darker side of self-expression.
In the 2/8 axis, all South Nodes run the risk of pulling the native back into self-destructive psychologically-related habits he or she might not be entirely conscious of, especially those s/he inherited and now has very little conscious control over. The South Node in Gemini knows too many people who cannot help her attain her material goals, and never focuses long enough on something specific to amass capital to invest. In other words, Gemini South Node runs the risk of frittering away any social or financial capital the North Node here works—and schmoozes—diligently to acquire.
It can also be said that the North Node in Sagittarius acquires social connections more effectively than most, part of which makes his world not only larger and more vibrant, but also makes it likely that when he needs a reference, he knows just the right person to call. The 2nd house, when taken at its most material level, is obviously about making money, and with North Node in Sagittarius, the native dreams big and has every chance of making those dreams come true, if he can master the tendency to squander his resources early in life.
As with any other nodal axis, how the rulers of each Node are aspected will affect success. If the South Node or its ruler is more aspected, generally, that makes it harder for the North Node to function. In this case, Sagittarius, as a fire sign, isn’t on the path to be miserable; he wants to enjoy the journey, not merely grind on to some predetermined destination.
This willingness to play around takes him down some strange byways, leading god knows where. If South Node Gemini is more dominant in the chart, he might stay permanently lost, hiding out in a cubbyhole somewhere, content to let the rest of the world get on with its material striving while he smokes ganja on the beaches of Goa, happy in his non-material shack, wearing his brightly-colored non-material rags.
Conversely, if Sagittarius finds a fascinating product, or starts a business that ends up trading on the Stock Exchange, it will most likely be because it was something he believed in, and that he enjoyed, which he will turn around and sell as soon as it becomes a chore. Consider, however: Sagittarius is a Fire sign, Gemini Air; neither are at all comfortable in this Earth/Water axis to begin with, and so for the native to succeed here, he just might have to rewrite the ‘rules of financial success’ to more accurately reflect his own free-spirited values.
Capricorn North Node in the 2nd House: There are some nodal combinations that are easier to live out than others; in some ways, Capricorn North Node is a much easier path to follow than many. Capricorn in an Earth house combined with its opposite, Cancer in Water makes this combination ‘feel’ better for the native. The energy flows more easily, and Capricorn’s innate ability to transform her ideas into something material is more easily expressed in an Earth/Water axis.
When you think about all the things in the material world that still require a human being to physically make them, to construct them or put them together, it is amazing how many possibilities there are to build the kind of empire Capricorn will quietly accrue over the years as long as the Cancer South Node receives what it needs from its childhood and family of origin and isn’t too hung up on the past.
Capricorn here has an intellectual and pragmatic vision, however; he won’t be happy just slapping bricks together—he will most likely prefer designing the form and structure for which the bricks will be used. He wants to find a way to build a better mousetrap and, at the same time, create a protective wall of security around himself. The need for self-protection will seem even more imperative when the South Node in Cancer feels damaged and brings that sense of loss with her into her relentless quest for safety.
Although these Nodes have a somewhat easier time expressing their element’s capabilities, whenever the 8th house is involved, there are potential complications Fire or Air houses (1,3,5,7,9,11) won’t have as much trouble with. Cancer South Node in the 8th might bring with it some very profound family wisdom, at one end of the potential 8th house spectrum; or, at the other, some very profound family issues.
Capricorn North Node will work even harder to attain his material goals if the childhood was difficult, making this life path one of compensation for everything done to the kid in his youth. Capricorn North Node will look for ways to ignore, avoid, wall up, or bury, 8th house issues, unless the South Node is aspected in such a way that no one can ignore the cry for help. North Node Capricorn’s primary goal is to stand on her own, whereas Cancer will actively seek help; Capricorn disdains sympathy, while Cancer craves it.
The life’s purpose here is about getting free of family drama so that s/he can quietly (and rationally) get on with building her little empire, but Capricorn always runs the risk of absolutely shutting off 8th house messages (of guilt, anguish, despair, etc.) so as to be able to more efficiently run his life. Bringing the issues of the 8th house to conscious awareness very likely will not be attempted unless the rest of the chart supports self-analysis at a deep level. Capricorn would rather ignore his or her darkness, never going down into that cellar to take a look under the floorboards.
This approach works pretty well until there’s a significant combination of transits that forces this person to at least look at her issues. Take Saturn’s aspects into account, since Saturn, as Capricorn’s ruler, will either assist or prevent self-analysis. The native spends a lot of time being busy, running from job to job, always worried about their earning power and security, rather than taking a good, hard look at why they feel so insecure in the first place.
Aquarius North Node in the 2nd House: Some houses are more helpful for Aquarius than others; the 2nd house North Node here can push the native to do something concrete the native might not otherwise have pursued. Aquarius North Node gives the native an opportunity to put some of their otherwise ‘crazy’ or eccentric ideas into material form; this can therefore be a wonderful position for artists or anyone who wants to create something no one has ever seen before.
Artists and other creative types do well with this North Node, since Aquarius is often much less concerned with making money for its own sake, instead seeking to become someone of note due to their unique contributions to society. Even the bricklayer has the desire to find a new way to lay bricks with this North Node, and Leo South Node further adds to the innate possibility of digging deep into the source material of the subconscious or unconscious.
Writers do well with this combination as well, as long as the material they draw from in the 8th isn’t prevented from surfacing because Leo South Node is embarrassed or feels their reputation or family name will be jeopardized. Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, might allow some of this material to come to the surface, but innate awareness of the power of one’s reputation prevents Leo/Aquarius Nodes from airing dirty laundry in public. Aquarius’ traditional ruler, Saturn, makes this a Nodal Axis more dignified than self-aggrandizing.
The combination of Leo/Aquarius in the Earth/Water 2nd/8th axis represents the kind of overwhelmingly fixed energy that leads the North Node to stick to its declared path, once he’s decided what he’s going to do with his life. This works well until a Uranus transit, which could blow the North Node in Aquarius’ fixed plans out of the water—pun intended, since you can’t be sure with the 8th house what external event will force the South Node into expression.
Leo’s determination never to be outdone or lose face can tug the native into some egocentric (and detrimental) decisions, where he’s capable of cutting off his nose to spite his face to make sure his competition doesn’t get ahead. Since Aquarius is renowned for his ability to share the spotlight (one of the higher principles of civilization Aquarius has every intention of living up to) the native might well end up ashamed of his lower instincts, emerging as they do unbidden from the depths of his psyche.
North Node in Aquarius, no matter the house, is on a quest to live out civilization’s higher principles. In the 2nd house, his goal is to make these higher principles manifest, and so he’s better off if he can work out his 8th house issues, particularly any ego needs for attention from his family, early in life. The family legacy here is usually a proud one; conversely, the 8th house influence might mean the family keeps many secrets to avoid public censure.
Pisces North Node in the 2nd House: Other house placements for Pisces North Node can avoid dealing with filthy lucre; the 2nd house North Node cannot. Pisces is the one sign least comfortable managing either people or money; he sees it as a blot on his character if he has to influence or manipulate others, preferring to leave well enough alone and not stain his karma.
He’d rather help out and feel good about his contribution than be in charge, telling others what to do, since for him, the material world is a tricky negotiation to begin with. More than any other North Node, this native might have particular trouble getting and keeping a job if it is either something he hates doing, or one he doesn’t believe in and support at the soul level.
Making money for its own sake would have to be supported by the rest of the chart, but even if this native has a loaded 2/8 axis, s/he isn’t going to be comfortable with the knowledge that fulfilling her purpose in life, which is to make a living, is denying someone else bread on their table across the world in some godforsaken country the Pisces North Node feels guilty about.
Feeling global guilt is something this nodal axis experiences regularly anyway, and in the 2nd/8th houses, Pisces/Virgo is far too aware that every action taken in the material world relies too heavily on someone’s sweatshop labor in poorer countries. The greater likelihood with this axis is that the Pisces North Node will make it his life’s work to counteract the negative affects of big banking; will protest the use of big money in politics, or will do everything in his power to bring down corporations, so that independent craftspeople can make more money doing what they love.
This is one South Node that might actually be, in terms of global guilt, better off than its North Node counterpart, especially for the small business owner or individual craftsperson, since Virgo in the 8th will give the native innate ability to create small, useful goods and services the North Node in Pisces person can then use to her advantage, selling online or in small shops or crafts’ fairs.
The primary negative to this Nodal axis lies in how negative the messages were in childhood, and how one’s self-esteem is tied so heavily to being useful and productive. Simply being on the planet, something Pisces questions anyway, since they have so much trouble placing value in the material realm, is nonetheless a plane they’re stuck with.
It’s important to recognize the corrosive effect negative messages in childhood will have on this native. Planets in conjunction or aspecting this Nodal axis, particularly Saturn conjunct Virgo South Node in the 8th—always a potentially troubled house emotionally due to its ability to bury emotional expression—is a particularly difficult influence to overcome later in life.
Pisces North Node needs to be walking a positive, uplifting path, and yet every Virgo South Node has the ability, when stressed, to drag this soul down into the muck and mire of negativity. I’m thinking here particularly of Rush Limbaugh, the hateful, negative radio ‘personality,’ who clearly expresses the negatives of Saturn within 10˚ conjunction with his otherwise vulnerable Virgo South Node.
Being of the body, taking care of their bodies, should matter to South Node in Virgo, but often North Node in Pisces will denigrate the body’s needs, forcing this person back into self-analysis. More than with any other Nodal combination, the dichotomy between spiritual and physical concerns implied in the 2/8 axis comes to the fore here, since fulfilling the 2nd house’s purpose is so very antithetical to the non-material values Pisces believes in.
Digging deeply into the past frequently isn’t even necessary, since self-esteem issues around the 2nd/8th axis are so obvious with this combination; one is afraid for these people’s overall health if they lack self-esteem. The lack of desire to participate with humanity’s ongoing quest for all that can bring the body comfort means these natives might not own much of anything; the entire ownership society idea might make them upset to the point of illness.
Probably the best use of North Node in Pisces energy here is to found a non-profit, or at least work for one. The South Node in Virgo makes them intensely aware of all the sick people on the planet who need to be fed and sheltered, but in staying busy providing care for the huddled masses, this combination might forget to eat, or bathe, for that matter.
Self-denial comes more easily here than with any other signs in this Nodal axis, although hopefully the South Node contacts are strong enough to remind this person she has a body, and not to disdain its needs. The overall life goal is about becoming aware of others’ needs, suffering, and sorrow; but not to the extent that they lose themselves, denying themselves small comforts.
Another thing to consider with North Node in Pisces is its ruler, Neptune’s, effect on the life path. Since Pisces has such trouble with the concept of living in the body, look to see how Neptune is aspected to determine how 2nd house skills might manifest; photographers, artists, craftspeople—any combination of Virgo’s handiwork and Piscean imagination goes together well, and the work of a lifetime might very well be more Neptunian than not.
This might also mean the native lives out her days in obscurity, since Neptune often undermines material efforts and goals, but it’s just as likely that the North Node person will be on a quest for the Great Work of Art s/he is truly capable of, if she believes in herself and her ability to be a creator.
